海上风电装机容量增速加快。2005年全球海上风电新增装机容量90MW ，2011年该数字就增加到974MW；截至2011年底，全球海上风电累计装机容量约为4272MW ，占全球累计风力发电总装机容量不到2%，仍然具备较大的提升空间。
2009年之前，全球海上风电装机规模全部分布于欧洲；从2009年开始，亚太地区海上风电装机容量开始启动，2011年全年新增装机容量超过150MW，占当年全球新增海上风电装机容量的18%。
